Our favorite review from

Berlin, Germany

Date: 8 August 2002
Summary: Man’s most perfect work of Art

No better movie was ever made, no better movie will ever be made. Filmmakers should not aspire to better it; instead let them be inspired by it. I realize that more comments on ‘Commando’ start out by praising it, but then phrases like ‘guilty pleasure’ and ‘leave your brain at the door’ start creeping in. As if watching this miracle on your TV-screen is comparable to watching old episodes of ‘The A-Team’ or listening to an El DeBarge song.

This attitude would be perfectly appropriate watching, say, the old ‘Star Wars’-trilogy; on the other hand the religious adoration and serious contemplation with which these (highly entertaining) children’s fairytales are often regarded, would be much more deserved by ‘Commando’.

(Obviously, people who think that ‘Commando’ is not even a good movie can be considered Philistines, and are beneath notice. They can continue wasting their lives watching ‘La vita è bella’ or such crap for all I care.)

On then to the movie at hand: The story tells us about John Matrix (perfectly embodied by Arnold Schwarzenegger), an ex-Special Forces colonel, taking up arms against rogue Valverdian general Arius, and his entire army. Arius is plotting to overthrow Val Verde’s legitimate president and take control of the country himself. For this he needs the president killed by the very man who helped the man become head of state: John Matrix. To ensure that Matrix will do as he says, he has his daughter kidnapped by one of Matrix’ former team members, Bennett (who holds a grudge against our hero). Bennett also manages to capture Matrix, who is brought before Arius and put before the dilemma: help Arius by killing the Valverdian president, or his daughter will die. Matrix has no choice but to let himself be put on the plane to Valverde, but he knows that Arius will kill his daughter whether he does wat he’s told or not. He kills his guard on the plane and gets off it during take-off. Matrix now has a mission: find his daughter and free her before the plane lands in Valverde and Arius learns that Matrix has betrayed him.

What follows is an exhilarating adventure, in which Matrix has to use every one of his considerable fighting skills to eliminate Bennett’s elite soldiers, Sully and Cook, find out where Arius is keeping his daughter, and get there. He is assisted by air-hostess Cindy, who gets involved in this against her will, but decides to help Matrix when she learns of the kidnapping. The total carnage that Matrix causes once he gets to the island where Arius is hiding is without equal – he just singlehandedly slaughters the entire army. And his titanic mano a mano with Bennett brings to mind the great duels of mythology, between Achilles and Hector, Arthur and Mordred, or Siegfried and the dragon. It leaves you completely overwhelmed.

The acting in ‘Commando’ is spot-on: Arnie is absolutely convincing as the unstoppable one-man army Matrix, Vernon Wells is sly and depraved as Bennett, Dan Hedaya as Arius conveys ruthless authority, and Rae Dawn Chong as Cindy is precisely comical enough. And who could forget the cold menace in the eyes of Cook (Bill Duke) and the ferret-like energy and defiance displayed by Sully (David Patrick Kelly)? Jenny Matrix (Alyssa Milano) already shows evidence of the iron will that drives her father.

The timing, the music, the way the movie shows off Arnie’s incredible physique (which affects you subliminally), the violence, and of course the oneliners, it’s all PERFECT!

I have seen, heard and read other examples of high western culture (Michelangelo’s ‘David’, Mozart’s ‘Le Nozze di Figaro’, Dante’s ‘Divina Commedia’ – other works of art that have at one time been qualified as the pinnacle of human artistic achievement), but nothing comes close to ‘Commando’. It’s as simple as that.

Just writing down quotes like “Scared, mother******? You better be, ’cause this Green Beret’s gonna kick your big ass”-”I eat Green Berets for breakfast, and right now I’m VERY HUNGRY!” makes my heart beat faster. You won’t find anything like this in Cervantes, I’ll tell you that.

To conclude, I can’t say I’m surprised that ‘Commando’ has not received the acclaim it deserves. Idiocy and pretence rule the world these days: just look at all the fuss that’s made about this ‘Lord of the Rings’-b******t… So you see, I’m not trying to convert anybody. It’s just that the truth has to be said once in a while.

When Matrix is rolling down the hill in the pickup truck near the start, he is going directly down the steep hill. The baddies are zig-zagging their way down in the 2 vehicles (skid turning the whole way as well – what’s the hurry?). Matrix clearly catches up to them and overtakes them (they had to avoid him), yet a few seconds later, the black cars are further down the hill in front of him again. Clearly impossible as he was racing down the optimal path with no brakes!

If you watch the Region 1 DVD beginning at 1:13:11, you can hear the blood squibs popping when Matrix shoots the pissant soldier.

When Matrix is fighting Cooke in the hotel room and they crash through the door, watch as Matrix picks him up and throws him up against the wall. Before the camera changes, you can clearly tell it’s a black dummy.

When Matrix crashes into the telephone pole, watch closely and you can see Cindy’s head fly off (it was obviously a dummy).

The yellow Porsche is damaged in the side collision with the red convertible, but when Matrix flips it upright and drives off in it, the side is undamaged.

When Matrix suits up on the beach, Matrix dons the combat vest. He subsequently puts streaks of camo paint over his exposed skin (arms and face). However, later in the gun fight when he strips off his top half, there appears to be camo paint all over his torso.

Cable holding up Sully by his shoe as Matrix holds him over a cliff.

The same guy with the long beard dies at least twice during the final shootout.

When Matrix enters the Galleria, it’s daylight. When he leaves only a few minutes later, it’s dark outside.

When Matrix jumps off the plane, the landing gear is almost completely retracted. When Matrix looks back at the plane after landing in the ocean, the landing gear is extended again.

The amount of blood on Bennett’s face in various shots in the fight with Matrix at the end.

When Matrix tells Bennett “I’ll be back!”, the car window is almost completely closed. Matrix shuts the car door and in the very next shot, the window is open.

When Matrix kicks Cooke through the door of adjoining hotel room, Cooke doesn’t land on the door, but on a thick white mat painted green on the front (and with a knob) to look like the door.

When Bennett says, “Your training, Matrix!” he is clearly excited, but in the next shot he is all serious again.

When Matrix is raiding the surplus store, and enters the hidden room full of guns, he grabs the rocket launcher off the wall and hands it to Cindy. After he says “Go!” and she leaves the room with the rocket launcher, the next shot of Matrix shows it hanging on the wall again.

When Matrix and his daughter walk into the water, their trousers are already wet.

In the final battle scene, every time someone is blown into the air by a grenade you can see the ram that throws them into the air.

In the fight between Matrix and Arius, Matrix rolls out and fires his shotgun repeatedly at Arius leaving blood stained bullet-holes scattered randomly all over Arius’ chest. As Arius falls toward the window, the bullet holes can be seen all lined up in little sets of six.

When Cindy walks out of the airport after Sully hits on her, she’s wearing high heels. Then when she walks into the airport parking lot, she’s wearing low heels.

After Matrix holds up Cindy for the first time, Cindy drives off and the crew is reflected in Matrix’s side of the car.

When Matrix is riding the sabotaged truck down the hill after the bad guys, smoke is visible coming from the tailpipe.

When Bennett gets on the boat at the beginning, you see the detonator wire for the boat.

Matrix rips out the seat in the red car, and sits real low, but when they go down the highway, he’s just as tall as the woman.

During the big shoot-out near the end of the film, Matrix is using an M-60 machine gun which repeatedly acquires more ammo (the ammo belt is replenished) even though Matrix has no spare ammo with him, nor any time to reload.

When Matrix starts rowing away from the seaplane there is no land behind him only water. The next scene shows the him on the beach with the seaplane in the water less than a quarter mile away. The land should have been visible when he started rowing.

When Matrix gets to Arius’ compound, he fires over thirty rounds from an M16A1 rifle that has a ten round magazine inserted in the magazine well.

When Matrix and Cindy enter the amphibian plane to take off, the guards shoot and hit the plane near the door. After landing when Matrix enters the inflatable boat, the bullet holes have disappeared.

Towards the end, Bennett pulls off the furnace door but his hands don’t get burned.

When Matrix blows up the building at the end, the soldiers chasing him can be seen wobbling. They are all clearly cardboard cutouts.

When Matrix throws the circular saw at the first person, wires on the blade can be seen.

When Matrix is preparing to destroy the building at Arius’ compound, he sets up the explosives on the outside. When it blows up, it clearly explodes from the inside.

When Matrix is “shopping” he puts many guns in the cart but he grabs the pistol and the shotgun shells after he tells Cindy to leave with the cart. Then he is arrested and the weapons that he grabbed after Cindy left are obviously confiscated, yet when he suits up on the beach for battle the pistol is one of the weapons he has and during the shootout the shotgun is fully loaded.

During the final battle at Arius’ compound, gunfire can clearly be heard in the background, yet Matrix is the only person attacking the base and nobody is shooting at him. Who are they shooting at?

The goof following is incorrectly regarded as a goof: When Matrix is hit by Sully’s Porsche outside the galleria he knocks off the sideview mirror. His wallet DOES NOT fall out of his pocket.

Matrix : Let off some steam, Bennett!

Sully : Oh, here. Have some beers in Val Verde, Matrix. It’ll give everyone a little more time with your daughter.
Henriques : Heh.
Matrix : You’re a funny guy, Sully, I like you. That’s why I’m going to kill you last.

Matrix : Remember, Sully, when I promised to kill you last?
Sully : That’s right, Matrix. You did.
Matrix : I lied.

Bennett: Tranquilizers…I wanted to use the real thing!

Cooke : You scared motherfucker? Well you should be because this green beret is going to kick your big ass.
Matrix : I eat green berets for breakfast. And right now I’m VERY hungry.
Cindy : I can’t believe this macho bullshit.

Matrix : I’ll be back, Bennett.

[Cindy has just shot him down]
Sully: You fuckin’ whore.

Matrix : Don’t break radio silence until they see me.
Cindy : How will I know?
Matrix : Because all fucking hell is going to break loose.

Matrix : [After killing a man in the plane] Don’t disturb my friend, he’s dead tired.

Soldier : Slitting a little girl’s throat is like cutting warm butter.
Bennett : Put the knife away and shut your mouth.

Gen. Kirby : Keep on the airwaves and let me know if you hear anything unusual.
Soldier : I’ll keep at it. What are you expecting?
Gen. Kirby : World War Three.

Biggs, Mall Security Guard : Attention all units, emergency on theater level, suspect six foot two, brown hair. He is one gigantic motherfucker.

Arius : Your father appears to be cooperating. You will be back with him soon. Won’t that be nice?
Jenny : Not as nearly as nice as watching him smash your face in.

[Cooke aims a gun at Matrix]
Cooke : Fuck you asshole.
[click]
Matrix : Fuck YOU asshole!

Cindy : What happened to Sully?
Matrix : I let him go.

Cindy : These guys eat too much red meat.

Bennett : John, I’m not going to shoot you between the eyes. I’m going to shoot you between the balls!

[Plane will not start]
Matrix : Fly or die.
[Plane starts up]
Matrix : Works every time.

Cooke : Where’s Sully?
Cindy : In the shower.
Cooke : Who are you?
Cindy : Room service.

Bennett : Ever since you had me thrown out of your unit I’ve waited to pay you back. Do you know what today is, Matrix? Pay-day!

Matrix : How much are they paying you, Bennett?
Bennett : They offered me a hundred grand. But you wanna know something? When I found out I’d get my hands on you, I said I’d do it for nothing!

[Cindy uses a rocket launcher]
Matrix : Where did you learn how to do that?
Cindy : I read the instructions.

Bennett : I really love listening to your little piss ant soldiers trying to talk tough. They make me laugh. If Matrix was here, he’d laugh too.

Arius : Mr. Bennett, my soldiers are patriots.
Bennett : Your soldiers are nothing. Matrix and I can kill every one of them
[snaps]
Bennett : in the blink of an eye. Remember that.
Arius : Are you trying to… frighten me?
Bennett : I don’t have to try. When Matrix finishes the job, he’ll be back for his daughter. Now whether she’s alive or dead doesn’t matter. Then he’ll be after you. Now the only thing between Matrix and you, is me.
Arius : It is you that is afraid, Mr. Bennett. YOU are afraid of Matrix.
Bennett : Of course. I’m smart. But I have an edge; I have his daughter.

Matrix : We’ll take Cooke’s car. He won’t be needing it.

Cindy : You don’t even have a car.
[Matrix pushes Sully's overturned car back upright]
Matrix : I do now.

Cindy : You steal my car, you rip the seat out, you kidnap me, you ask me to help you find your daughter which I very kindly do, and then you get me involved in a shoot out where people are dying and there’s blood spurting all over the place, and then I watch you rip a phone booth out of a wall, swing from the ceiling like Tarzan, and then there’s a cop that’s going to shoot you and I save you and they start chasing me. Are you going to tell me what’s going on or what?
Matrix : No.

Stewardess: Any carry-on luggage?
Matrix : Just him.

Matrix : A guy I trusted for years wants me dead.
Cindy : I’ve only known you five minutes and I want you dead, too.

Matrix : Come on, Bennett, throw away that chicken-shit gun. You don’t just want to pull a trigger. Put the knife in me and look me in the eye and see what’s going on in there when you turn it.

[While talking to a bunch of pretty ladies]
Biggs, Mall Security Guard : Wanna see me kick some ass?

Lawson : I was afraid you’d miss me!
Cooke : Dont worry, we won’t.
[Cooke and Diaz execute Lawson]

Soldier : What, you’re expecting me to smell those guys coming?!
Matrix : I did.

Diaz : Mellow out man. We can’t talk business with you waving guns in people’s faces. Your daughter is safe, Colonel. Now whether she stays that way is up to you. My people, they got some business with you. And if you want your kid back, then you gotta cooperate, right?
Matrix : Wrong!
[shoots Diaz between the eyes]

Cooke : You know what I like best about this car? The price.
[Cranks up the car and backs up]
Forrestal, Car Salesman : Wait a minute! You can’t do that in here!
[Cooke speeds up and runs over Forrestal]

Gen. Kirby : Leave anything for us?
Matrix : Just bodies.

[Matrix declines an offer to resume his unit]
Matrix : This was the last time.
Gen. Kirby : Until next time.
[pause]
Matrix : No chance.

The song that plays at the end credits is “We Fight For Love” by Power Station. You can find it on the Soundtrack page of this website.

During the scene in the shed, after Matrix cuts the soldier’s arm off, he was originally supposed to hit the victim with it and tell him to shut up. This scene was edited out as being too macabre.

Matrix kills approximately 80 people in Commando.

Following his success in the Conan movies and The Terminator (1984), producers realized that Arnold Schwarzenegger was becoming a household name. This was the first film in which he got true “top” billing: the name Schwarzenegger was placed at the top of the poster, above the title of the film. Almost every film he has starred in since has done the same.

John McTiernan was offered the chance to direct this film, and turned it down. Later, while editing Nomads (1986), his feature debut, he was offered the chance to direct Arnold Schwarzenegger’s second film for 20th Century Fox, Predator (1987), which he accepted.

The shopping mall used is the same one that was used in Terminator 2: Judgment Day, also starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The mansion used in the final shoot out between Matrix and Arius is the same mansion in the final shoot out between Axel Foley and Victor Maitland in Beverly Hills Cop (1984).

Vernon Wells originally auditioned for the role of John Matrix.

Long Beach Airport’s (Long Beach, California) passenger terminal served as the fictional “Aeropuerto Val Verde”.

Scenes Cut From The British Version

(Credit: http://www.michaeldvd.com.au/Censorship/CensorshipDetail.asp?ID=1460)

For some reason, the British Board of Film Classification (or BBFC) decided Commando was too violent and requested 15 seconds of cuts before they agreed to release the film. If you live in the UK and wonder if you own a cut version, read below:

The cuts were as follows:

1. During John Matrix’s (Schwarzenegger’s) climactic siege on Arius’ (Dan Hedaya’s) villa to reclaim his daughter (a very young Alyssa Milano), the infamous “toolshed” sequence was trimmed of two brief, though graphic, moments; the guard being downed by an axe to the groin was removed, and the guard who has his arm chopped off by Matrix with a machete, as well as the subsequent shot of him screaming in pain at his bleeding stump, were removed in their entirety.

2. The finale fight between Matrix and Bennett (Vernon Wells, who astute readers will remember as Wes in “Mad Max 2″) has been trimmed of the pay-off to Bennett’s evisceration with a length of pipe. The close-up tracking shot down the pipe has been removed.

Clearly, the number of cuts detailed in Paul Williams’ review of Fox’s R4 do not match at all against the above cuts as censored from the UK R2 release! At a staggering 56 seconds (estimated), the cuts do not at all mirror the 12 seconds of cuts requested of the UK edition. So, the question remains, where did Fox source their master for the R4 release?

I had entertained the idea that the Australian master had been lifted from a European R2 original, and reformatted, but a decisive email from one of our readers from Denmark confirmed that the R2 disc is definitely uncut. There has been strong confirmation that the French R2 PAL disc is complete.

Thus, and I’m going out on a limb here, based upon the censorship history of film in a variety of world-wide territories; confirmation that the French R2 disc is uncut; coupled with confirmation that the UK R2 disc will undoubtedly mirror that territory’s video release (ie: the 12 seconds of cuts will stand), there is only one remaining European territory where the film was trimmed for violence for both its cinema & video releases. That territory was Germany. I am happy to be proven wrong in this instance, but all current information points towards Fox utilizing an edited German R2 master for the Australian R4 release. Until somebody owns up to the facts, or I am deluged by email from our European readers confirming otherwise, this is the best hypothesis I can offer as to the reasons behind the R4 disc of “Commando” being released in such a shoddy, emasculated version.

There are approximately 56 seconds of missing footage in total. Here is a list of all the cut scenes that I noticed and their approximate lengths, plus a general comment on what happened in the cut footage. I played my VHS tape version of Commando simultaneously with the DVD to produce this list.
Location
(mins:secs) Cut
(secs) Description of cut footage
2:01 4 Making sure the first target is dead by shooting him again.
21:18 5 John Matrix snapping Henriques’ neck.
45:31 14 Close up of Cooke dying whilst impaled on a table leg.
66:50 1 John cutting guard’s throat.
67:09 2 John cutting another guard’s throat.
67:18 5 John killing two guards.
68:35 5 John shooting two guards.
70:20 4 John shooting more guards.
71:36 2 John stabbing a guard with a pitchfork in the chest.
71:40 6 John using an axe and a machete to dispatch two more guards (ouch – that’s got to have hurt).
79:16 2 Bennett gets a longer electric shock.
79:50 1 Pipe hitting Bennett.
79:55 5 Panning shot along the pipe protruding from Bennett’s chest.
